Family Collective Podcast
Family Collective is produced by the National Family Support Technical Assistance Center, led by the National Federation of Families & funded by SAMHSA. Featuring conversations to inspire change for families & improve family-driven care. As families experience increasing rates of mental health and substance use challenges, there's a critical need for more support and parity in coverage for families. Meet people with lived expertise and the changemakers working to strengthen families. The contents are those of the presenters and do not represent the views of SAMHSA/HHS/U.S. Govt.
Our guests joining us today in our very first episode are from “Remarkably Resilient Together” – an organization that empowers individuals of all ages to strengthen their resilience by providing techniques for emotional regulation and self-care practices. We’ll also hear about their lived experience – informed by the neuroscience of trauma.
We’ll meet Kathleen Harnish McKune one of three sisters who grew up in a childhood home with multi-generational incest, abuse, and neglect. The Harnish sisters broke that cycle - the neuroscience of trauma helped them see HOW they did that. Their 2019 book, "Remarkably Resilient: Community Matters", shares their journeys.
This lived experience is complemented by, Tim DeWeese, Director, Johnson County Mental Health Center, Kansas - one of the non-profit partners working with the Harnish sisters in this community campaign to "Empower individuals with the practices of emotional regulation and self-care". This matters because we are all more resilient humans when we are emotionally regulated with full resilience cups.
Join us this month as we sit down with David Cozart, the Chief Visionary Officer for the Commonwealth Center for Fathers and Families.
In this insightful episode, we delve into the topic of “Supporting Fathers as Caregivers to Children of All Ages Experiencing Mental Health and Substance Use Challenges.”
Discover the unique role of a Chief Visionary Officer and how this innovative title fosters out-of-the-box thinking to ensure fathers are included as full partners within a child’s life and as caregivers of their children.
David shares his expertise with Gail Cormier (NFSTAC Project Director), on collaboration, collective impact, and policy change, that highlights the crucial need for state-level policymakers to collaborate with community organizations. Together, they explore how to develop holistic programs that support families and recognize the evolving definition of family, emphasizing the importance of including fathers as valuable assets in all plans.
As tradition, The Family Collective asks each guest, “What advice would you give yourself starting out in this industry?”
Hear as David reflects on his journey and offers advice to his younger self starting out in this field. Don't miss his inspiring insights in this riveting episode!
We start the New Year with inspiration as NFSTAC’s Lachelle Freeman speaks to Lee Davis: entrepreneur, organizer, mentor, and advocate making a significant difference in his community.
Lee and Lachelle discuss community engagement, collective impact and giving back to communities. Lee also shares his own lived experience -- from self-described “project kid” to coming full circle today as a changemaker in his own community and why.
Professionally, Davis is Co-owner/President of SLG Sports & Ent., CEO of Lee Davis & Associates Consulting LLC. And President of Sports Marketing Firm (Atlanta/Pittsburgh). However, he’s more widely known as an icon for his work uplifting and empowering youth, families, and the community. Davis is Co-founder of “A Hand Up” LLC (Workforce Development initiative) and co-founded the Woodland Hills School District’s Commission on Youth Affairs and The Kid Nation Foundation. He serves on the boards of HOMEWOOD HOMES (Transitional Living Houses) and The Allegheny Co. Homicide Review. He is a former member of the Braddock Carnegie Library board of trustees (Pittsburgh, PA).
Family Collective asks each guest, “What advice would you give yourself starting out in this industry?” Lee explains why your today is not your tomorrow.
